Praise For “What Happened” — On The Last Day Of Hillary Clinton’s Book Tour

It was clear from the moment Hillary Clinton published her new book, “What Happened,” that she was going to spend the next few months trying to rewrite history.

That’s why, a little more than one month ago, we launched “One Year Of Hillary,” a year-long project to correct the record and explain What (Really) Happened in 2016.

Today is officially the last day of Clinton’s failed nationwide book tour, so we wanted to pass along some of the best praise of her book — from the White House to Senator Bernie Sanders.

Praise For Hillary Clinton’s New Book, “What Happened”

USA Today OnPolitics Blog: “Hillary Clinton’s New Book Gets Hit From The Left And The Right.” “This week, pundits from both sides of the political fence heaped criticism on Hillary Clinton’s memoir What Happened, which examines her 2016 loss to President Trump. Commentators from the left and the right slammed Clinton for blaming everyone but herself for her historic defeat.” (William Cummings, “The Bubble: Hillary Clinton’s New Book Gets Hit From The Left And The Right,” USA Today, 09/14/17)

Democrat Senator Bernie Sanders: “Does Anybody Really Believe” This Book? “Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) mocked Hillary Clinton Thursday night on MSNBC after being questioned about a passage from Clinton’s upcoming 2016 election memoir, What Happened, laughing at the notion that he stole her ideas. . . . ‘I.e. Bernie Sanders just stole all of Hillary Clinton’s ideas. Does anybody really believe that?’ Sanders said, snickering.” (Charles Russell, “Sanders Mocks Clinton’s Book: ‘Does Anybody Really Believe’ I Stole Her Ideas?” Washington Free Beacon, 09/07/17)

Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill Shook Her Head And Walked Away. “Asked whether she was excited about Clinton’s book tour, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), one of Republicans’ top 2018 targets, responded first with, ‘Beg your pardon?’ Asked again, she started shaking her head, walking away.” (Edward-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti, “Democrats Dread Hillary’s Book Tour,” POLITICO, 09/07/17)

Democrat Senator Ron Wyden: “I’ve Always Been A Looking Forward Kind Of A Guy . . . I Think I’ll Leave It At That.”‘I’ve always been a looking forward kind of a guy,’ said Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), asked the same question on Wednesday. ‘I think I’ll leave it at that.’” (Edward-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti, “Democrats Dread Hillary’s Book Tour,” POLITICO, 09/07/17)

Democrat Congressman Jared Huffman: “Please Hillary, Don’t Go There.” “Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) says 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton shouldn’t cast blame on Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for helping President Trump attack her. ‘Please Hillary, don’t go there,’ Huffman tweeted in response to leaks of Clinton’s upcoming book. ‘I supported you. Bernie showed restraint & class & ran aspirational campaign. Politics is rough sometimes.’” (Rebecca Savransky, “Dem Lawmaker On Clinton Criticizing Sanders In New Book: ‘Don’t Go There,’” The Hill, 09/06/17)

Former Hillary Clinton Fundraiser: “I Wish She’d Just Shut The F— Up And Go Away.” “‘The best thing she could do is disappear,’ said one former Clinton fundraiser and surrogate who played an active role at the convention. ‘She’s doing harm to all of us because of her own selfishness. Honestly, I wish she’d just shut the f— up and go away.” (Jonathan Easley, “Clinton’s Score-Settling Frustrates Democrats,” The Hill, 09/07/17)

Democrat Donor: “I Think She Should Just Zip It, But She’s Not Going To.” “‘I think she should just zip it, but she’s not going to,’ said one top Democratic donor who spoke with Clinton about the book this summer.” (Edward-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti, “Democrats Dread Hillary’s Book Tour,” POLITICO, 09/07/17)

Former Bill Clinton Pollster: “Hillary, Time To Exit The Stage.” “Hillary Clinton’s latest book ‘What Happened’ and her ensuing book tour are the latest examples of the former presidential candidate creating fresh tensions within the Democratic Party. What happened is not terribly complicated: Clinton lost the election to Donald Trump and weakened the Democratic Party in the process.” (Douglas E. Schoen, “Hillary, Time To Exit The Stage,” The Hill, 09/10/17)

Former Obama Administration Official: “It’s Like Watching Two Children Bickering.” “‘It reiterates that our party is still led by people with fatal flaws,’ said one former senior Obama administration official. Another former Obama official added, ‘It’s like watching two children bickering.’ The only winner from the infighting, they say, is the Republican president.” (Amie Parnes, “Dems Fear Lasting Damage From Clinton-Sanders Fight,” The Hill, 09/18/17)

Executive Director Of Nurses Union: “Pathetic.” “‘Pathetic. But it is a planned mass PR campaign in prep for the corporate #Dems next candidate. Reality: 75% did not vote 4 her. Denial,’ tweeted RoseAnn DeMoro, the executive director of National Nurses United.” (Edward-Isaac Dovere and Gabriel Debenedetti, “Democrats Dread Hillary’s Book Tour,” POLITICO, 09/07/17)

Republican Senator John McCain: “What’s The Fucking Point?” “And while McCain has lately announced plans for his own memoir, which will reach back to 2008, he suggested Clinton had erred in writing hers so quickly. ‘What’s the fucking point? Keep the fight up? History will judge that campaign, and it’s always a period of time before they do. You’ve got to move on. This is Hillary’s problem right now: She doesn’t have anything to do.’” (David Usborne, “The Last Detail,” Esquire, 11/26/17)

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders: “I Would Think [President Trump] Is Pretty Well Versed On What Happened.” “Asked during a Tuesday press briefing whether the book ‘What Happened’ would find its way to the First Bedside Table, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders slung a pretty good burn: ‘I would think he’s pretty well versed on what happened.’” (Emily Heil, “Trump Probably Will Not Read Hillary Clinton’s New Book. Spokeswoman: ‘He’s Pretty Well Versed On What Happened,’” Washington Post, 09/12/17)

Kellyanne Conway, Counselor To The President: Democrats Want Hillary Clinton To “Fade Out Of The Limelight.” “‘Look at the crackup of the left,’ Conway said. ‘You’ve got Hillary Clinton who Democrats are whispering all over this town they wish that this book didn’t happen — that she would just either make herself useful or fade out of the limelight.’” (“Kellyanne Conway Says Democrats Want Hillary Clinton To ‘Make Herself Useful Or Fade Out,’” AOL, 08/24/17)

Washington Post Blogger: “Hillary Clinton 3.0 Isn’t Helping The Democrats Move On.” “The Clintons don’t do graceful, and they certainly don’t do farewells. Instead, Clinton is thrashing around in front of the faithful, having pity parties and making news that has caught the attention of Republicans everywhere. Incredibly, Clinton herself declares that she is anything but done.” (Ed Rogers, “Hillary Clinton 3.0 Isn’t Helping The Democrats Move On,” Washington Post, 09/21/17)

TV Host Seth Meyers: “Don’t Blame Bernie Because Donald Trump Called You Names.” “Reacting to recently released excerpts from Clinton’s upcoming book, ‘What Happened,’ Meyers criticized the Democratic presidential candidate for partly blaming Bernie Sanders for her loss. ‘Don’t blame Bernie because Donald Trump called you names,’ Meyers said, referencing a passage in the book. ‘It’s not like Trump wasn’t going to do that anyway.’” (Chris Barton, “Seth Meyers Criticizes Hillary Clinton For Blaming Her Loss On Bernie Sanders,” Los Angeles Times, 09/07/17)

TV Host Jimmy Kimmel: This Is Like “Reading A Book About Why The Titanic Sank While You’re Sitting At The Bottom Of The Ocean.” “Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel ripped Hillary Clinton’s forthcoming book about her 2016 presidential election defeat, saying it’s like ‘reading a book about why the Titanic sank while you’re sitting at the bottom of the ocean.’ ‘I was just thinking to myself this morning, ‘I would love to relive that magical election of 2016,’’ the comedian joked during his monologue on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’” (Jessica Chasmar, “Jimmy Kimmel: Clinton’s Book Is Like Reading About Titanic While Sitting ‘At The Bottom Of The Ocean,’” Washington Times, 09/07/17)

Washington Post Columnist: “Hillary Clinton Still Doesn’t Get ‘What Happened’ In The 2016 Election.” “Hillary Clinton’s new memoir of her failed presidential campaign is titled ‘What Happened.’ A better title would be ‘What Happened?’ because Clinton apparently has no idea.” (Marc A. Thiessen, “Hillary Clinton Still Doesn’t Get ‘What Happened’ In The 2016 Election,” Washington Post, 09/13/17)

Wall Street Journal Columnist: What Happened Is That The Democrat Party “Had Nobody Else” To Run. “Hillary’s take on ‘What Happened’ has unsurprisingly unleashed another round of analysis about her mistakes—Wisconsin, deplorables, email. These sorts of detailed postmortems of failed campaigns are popular, but they tend to obscure the bigger reasons for failure. In this case: The Democratic Party saddled itself with an ethically compromised and joyless candidate, because it had nobody else.” (Kimberley Strassel, “Here’s What Really Happened To Hillary,” Wall Street Journal, 09/14/17)
